Do pets need dog friends?
I have a 12 year old rescue mixed Maltese. I also have an an 8 year old Rhodesian Ridgeback.
The Maltese came first, and so they have lived together for 8 years now.
Recently I was talking to someone who has been a dog owner for his whole life and I consider an expert in training dogs.
I mentioned that I like the fact that the two dogs can keep each other company while I'm at work. He mentioned offhandedly that it probably doesn't matter much either way -- the two dogs would most likely be equally happy if they were separate and lived their own lives with different owners.
In short, he insinuated that there really isn't any reason for having these two glued at the hip. Recently I had the opportunity to send the Maltese off to live with my elderly father, who lives in a different town. I said no, since I thought the dogs would be happier together. Maybe that's not the case.
