Is there a way to quantify the amount of destructed beta cells in the pancreas?
As a Type 1 diabetic young adult, a friend of mine was told 8 years ago at the emergency and endocrinology services, that his beta cells had been killed by his own immune system. Nevertheless, none of his blood tests has ever revealed self destroying antibodies.
As he has very few needs in terms of insulin, and his blood glucose levels have always been "under control" and more stable than not, he was then told that he might still be traversing the honey moon time period. In other words, his pancreas may actually still be secreting some insulin.
? Would MRI or alike techniques help to tell the proportion of destroyed beta cells?
? As we don't know exactly what triggers this condition, I was wondering, may the cause be due to some signal not being sent to the pancreas beta cells in the first place?
? What stimuli eventually causes those pancreas' cells to secrete insulin?
