Is Glimepiride a better sulfonylurea than Gliclazide and Glipizide for diabetic patients?
I was looking at the prescriptions of my grandmom who is a 78 year young diabetes fighter. She had her sugar shooting to dangerous level of about 650(after meals).
Her doctor changed her Gliclazide(80mg) prescriptions to Glimepiride(5mg) and Glipizide(2mg),
all of which come under the class of drugs called 'Sulfonylureas'.
While he did this, he also increased her Biguanide dosage of the drug Metformin Hydrochloride from 500mg to a 1000mg.
Just a Note:
Sulfonylureas' role: increasing insulin secretion so that the body can use it more efficiently to use the excess sugar and lower the overall levels.
Biguanides' role: decreasing the production of glucose, the body’s source of sugar, in the liver, in order to control the blood sugar levels.
