How to improve improvisation (darbuka / doumbek) hand drum
A few years ago, I bought an instructional DVD on how to play the darbuka, and now, all these years later, I have more or less got the all the featured beats down.
The issue is I tend to sound a bit more robotic than some of the more reputed darbuka players. I noticed a big difference is their ability to start with a basic beat and then transition to using that beat as a framework for improvisation -- which sounds really spectacular.
Question
Perhaps this is a creature of oriental music, but how can one improve one's ability to improvise on the darbuka and sound less robotic (playing the same beat over and over).
