The Roles of SSRIs and Neurotransmitters in Migraines
How do SSRIs alleviate migraine pain? Can anyone shed any light into the mechanism please? More broadly, I am interested in the roles of neurotransmitters in the cause and potential prevention of migraine. In particular, I am interested in the roles of serotonin, dopamine and norepinephrine.
20 years ago, I did some casual studies into the chain of events that led to vasodilation. I cannot remember any of it now. But I believe it went something along the lines of an imbalance of serotonin induced by an imbalance of dopamine caused by an imbalance of norepinephrine caused by dysfunctional locus coeruleus. Can anyone shed any light into this or a possible mechanism that could lead to vasoconstriction and vasodilation during migraines?
I would like to understand the chain of events that lead to cerebral vasodilation. I am aware that vascular model of migraine is no longer considered to describe the primary pathophysiology of migraines.
Thanks.
