Can orthotics cause more foot / ankle problems?
I've used arch supports in my trainers for years due to some of the problems I've had with my flat feet, mainly along the lines of plantar fasciitis and problems with my tibialis posterior tendon.
I saw a physio about a year ago who prescribed me a bunch of barefoot single-leg exercises and slow-tempo calf-raises with my toes propped up.
I've been doing the exercises on and off over the last year (couldn't stick to them properly for a number of reasons) but I feel like the problems I've been having originally have now gone and often feel like I don't even really need my orthotics anymore.
However I am now getting the occasional pains on the other side of my ankle, e.g. my peroneus muscles. I think I've noticed that this only happens when I've walked a few miles with my orthotics in. I wonder if my feet are now supinating too much when I use the orthotics.
Could it be that my feet are stronger now and that I'm better off just ditching the orthotics? My feet still look pretty flat, but I feel like they're stronger at least.
