Meaning of "patients were self-selected to undergo treatment or remain untreated"
From Treatment of Folate Metabolism Abnormalities in Autism Spectrum Disorder:
In an open-label therapeutic trial of patients with nonsyndromic infantile ASD, patients were self-selected to undergo a comprehensive treatment protocol (n=82) or remain untreated (n=84).
What is the meaning of self-selected? Does it mean that patients themselves chose whether to take the drug or remain in the comparison group?
I looked up the mentioned paper, titled "Improving Outcome in Infantile Autism with Folate Receptor Autoimmunity and Nutritional Derangements: A Self-Controlled Trial" (available on ResearchGate).
There seems to be no mention of patients self-selecting treatment. Furthermore, the patients there were aged 1 to 18, so the majority of them were hardly competent enough to self-select treatment.
