How can bodily immune response be tested?
How can the level of bodily immune response be tested? For example, in sepsis the body makes a massive immune response, but in viral diseases, like the common cold, the immune response is less intense. How can this be measured?
For example, lets imagine a patient complains of a chest cold. The chest cold might be caused by a virus, or by bacteria (incipient pneumonia). One possible indicator of whether the chest cold is bacterial or viral in nature is to measure in some way the level of immune response. If a bacteria is the cause we might expect to see a greater immune response than if it is a virus. How can such a test be done?
