Are there any MIDI-based drum coaching applications around?
Being a (hobby) guitarist, I always wanted to learn drums. As I don't have a dedicated rehearsal space, I decided to buy a used V-Drums kit (TD 17) from Roland with meshheads. The module comes with an integrated coaching function where you can play exercises and get a summary of your timings etc. This is nice, but it is not that sophisticated and hard to read on the small display.
So I wondered if there are any "big" coaching applications available for your PC, where you can use your big screen, be it standalone or as VST-plugin for your DAW. I think of different modes, ranging from simple playalong with subtle visual feedback up to maybe something more playful (guitar-hero style).
From a technical point of view, I think there must exist something like that as MIDI has been around for ages and is still universally used everywhere. I could not find anything like that.
And yes, of course, a human drum teacher would probably be the best way to go, but I do not want to spend a lot of money as this is just a hobby, and apart from that I am mostly self-educated, so I want to keep it like that. Thanks for your recommendations, I can imagine that this might be interesting for a lot of people.
Update: It turns out that Roland has exactly what I was looking for: Drum Tutor.
Another update: An even better choice with a modern UI: Melodics Drums

I'm not sure of anything from an actual teaching perspective, but if you are looking for fun Guitar Hero style learning, then check out the game Rock Band because it also includes drums. You can use any electronic drum set with a little bit of setup. Here is a video showing how to make it work:
